Gliclazide 80 mg + Metformin 500 mg Sustained Release Tablets
Pack: 10 tablets/strip
Dosage:
- Recommended Dose: One tablet twice daily (B.I.D), typically with breakfast and dinner.
- Special Populations:
- Renal Impairment: Dose adjustments may be required; consult with a healthcare professional.
- Hepatic Impairment: Use with caution and under medical supervision.
- Elderly: Monitoring is advised, with possible dose adjustments based on individual tolerance and kidney function.
Mode of Action:
- Gliclazide: A second-generation sulphonylurea that works by improving defective insulin secretion and reversing insulin resistance. It effectively lowers fasting blood glucose (FBG), postprandial glucose (PPG), and HbA1c levels. Gliclazide also possesses properties that may prevent the progression of diabetic retinopathy and reduce platelet adhesion and aggregation, thereby helping to manage diabetic microangiopathy.
- Metformin: Reduces hepatic glucose production and suppresses hepatic gluconeogenesis, which helps in controlling blood sugar levels. Metformin is also beneficial in managing patients with non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM) with or without obesity, and those with vascular complications.
Indication:
- Uncontrolled Type 2 diabetes mellitus
- Non-Insulin Dependent Diabetes Mellitus (NIDDM) with or without obesity
- NIDDM with vascular complications
How to Take Glicvin-M:
- Take one tablet twice daily, preferably with meals to reduce gastrointestinal side effects.
- Swallow the tablet whole with water. Do not crush or chew the tablet.
- Maintain a consistent routine to ensure steady blood glucose control.
Possible Side Effects:
As with all medications, Glicvin-M may cause side effects, though not everyone will experience them. Common side effects include:
- Hypoglycemia (Low Blood Sugar): Symptoms may include sweating, dizziness, shaking, and confusion. This is more likely if you skip meals, exercise more than usual, or drink alcohol.
- Gastrointestinal Issues: Metformin can cause side effects like nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and stomach pain, especially when you first start taking the medication.
- Weight Gain: Gliclazide may cause slight weight gain due to its insulin-stimulating effects.
- Headache and Dizziness: These symptoms may occur, especially at the beginning of treatment.
- Vitamin B12 Deficiency: Long-term use of metformin can lead to vitamin B12 deficiency, which may result in anemia or neuropathy.
- Allergic Reactions: Rarely, patients may experience rashes, itching, or swelling. Seek medical attention if any severe allergic reactions occur.
Precautions:
- Kidney Function: Regular monitoring is required as both components of Glicvin-M are excreted through the kidneys.
- Liver Function: Periodic liver function tests are recommended.
- Cardiovascular Risk: Use with caution in patients with cardiovascular disease.
- Alcohol: Limit alcohol consumption as it can increase the risk of hypoglycemia and lactic acidosis with metformin.
