Mode of Action
Rifaximin is a poorly absorbed bactericidal rifamycin Antibiotic
It has broad-spectrum bactericidal activity against both gram-positive and gram-negative aerobic and anaerobic bacteria
It inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by irreversibly binding to the beta-subunit of the bacterial DNA-dependent RNA polymerase
Indication
Irritable bowel syndrome, hepatic encephalopathy, travelers’diarrhea (TD) of Escherichia coli, Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth, Diverticulitis, Inflammatory bowel disease, Pouchitis, Spontaneous bacteria peritonitis, Clostridiumdifficile infection
Dosage – T.I.D
Side effects – Nausea, Vomiting
Contraindication – Hypersensitivity to rifamycinAntibiotic
Adverse drug reaction – Fatigue, peripheral edema, dizziness, and muscle spasms
Drug interaction – cholera vaccine, gemfibrozil, lactobacillusrhamnosus
